Dentures – Implant Supported
What are Implant-Supported Dentures?
An implant-supported denture helps to keep your appliance in without the use of gels, adhesives and strips. Several implants are inserted per arch and a newly-made denture snaps onto the implants. This prevents the denture from slipping or falling out during the day. The denture can still be removed to be cleaned and disinfected.
Why are Implant-Supported Dentures necessary?
Implant-supported dentures offer a more secure fit when you wear a prosthetic. If you have trouble with your denture slipping and falling out of place during the day, implants can prevent this from happening. Many patients find that their implant-supported dentures look more natural because they’re more fitting to their mouth. Your dentures can last for about seven years, but the underlying implants are completely permanent.
What makes you a viable candidate for Implant-Supported Dentures?
In order for the implants to be placed, you’ll undergo oral surgery. You should be healthy enough not only to undergo surgery, but to heal after the procedure is done. To determine if you’re a good candidate for implant-supported dentures, we’ll perform an exam and consult with you. During this time, we will discuss your options as well as sedation choices for when the surgery is started.
What happens during the procedure for Implant-Supported Dentures?
First, we will administer sedation as needed to make the procedure easier for you. Several implants are inserted deep into the bone of either the upper or lower jaw. The gums are sutured to promote adequate healing of your new titanium implants. Over the course of a few months, the implants will fuse naturally with the surrounding bone and become permanent. A new denture is made specifically for you that works to snap onto the implants to keep your prosthetic in place. Slight adjustments may be needed to your denture to improve the fit and feel of it. Your new denture can last for many years before it should be replaced.
